What do louvered pergolas, outdoor refrigerators, and speakers all have in common? No matter which option you choose, they’re all expensive. With big investments, you don’t want to buy just any product; you want to buy the best. Check out the list below for the best outdoor sound systems with both wired and wireless options.

Best Outdoor Sound Systems for Wireless Speakers

If you want an all-in-one product that can connect to your phone or another device, you may be more interested in a wireless outdoor sound system. Built for convenience, most are often portable and best for small to mid-size areas. These options produce great sound for the average listener. But if you’re nitpicky about clarity and specifics, you may be more satisfied with one of the hardwired systems.

1. Sonos Move

One of the best outdoor sound systems for wireless speakers is the Sonos Move. They have an IP65 rating, which is excellent for outdoor-rated products. Just as their name suggests, they’re designed to be portable. As such, they’re more compact than the other options. You can connect them through either Bluetooth or Wifi. They also offer voice control, which makes them perfect for pool parties. Despite all the great features, they’re best for small spaces. You’ll need multiple speakers to cover a large backyard. They’re also battery-powered, which means you’ll need to recharge them. Also, If you choose to mount them, you’ll need to buy the equipment separately.

2. JBL Partybox 310

For a larger area, the JBL Partybox may be a better option. It’s a 240 Watt, battery-powered speaker that lasts up to 18 hours. It has several unique features, like a travel handle and built-in strobe lights. The biggest downside is the price, with each speaker costing around $480.

3. Pyle Wireless Speakers

Unlike the other two, the Pyle speakers are designed more like wired speakers. They come with mounting hardware and a power cord instead of a battery. But they’re Bluetooth to connect directly to your device. They also offer different options for Wattage, ranging from around $58 for the 40W to $256 for the 800W.

Best Outdoor Sound Systems for Wired Speakers

If you want to cover a large area with consistent, high-clarity sound, a wired system may be better. You can install them in the corners of your pergola, outdoor bar, or some other structure. Although wired speakers are known for better sound quality, they’re also more expensive and require extra equipment. For example, you’ll need to connect them to a receiver.

4. Polk Audio Atrium 6

One of the highest-rated and best outdoor sound systems on the market is the Polk Audio Atrium 6. It will cover many midsize to large backyards without sacrificing sound clarity. It’s also constructed with quality materials, such as stainless steel and aluminum, which will hold up well outdoors. They also come with mounts for vertical or horizontal installation, making them convenient for space. One of the most significant downsides to this option is that they’re not Bluetooth, meaning you’ll need to buy a separate adapter to play music directly from your phone, etc. For around $350, you can get two speakers in either white or black.

5. Definitive Technology AW 5500

Another great option to cover a large area is the Definitive Technology AW 6500 speakers. Like the Polk speakers, they include mounting brackets. They’re more expensive, with each speaker costing around $300 compared to $200 for a regular-priced Polk. But they have a higher power output (200 Watts vs. 100 Watts for the others). They’re also great for bass if you’re picky about that.

6. Bose 251 Outdoor Speakers

The Bose 251 speakers make a great choice when considering the best outdoor sound systems. They’re around the same height as the Polk brand, but more narrow. Sold as a pair, you can purchase two black or white speakers for $398, which equals around $200 each.

7. Kicker KB6B Speakers

One of the best outdoor sound systems for both price and quality is the Kicker KB6B speakers. They offer similar perks to the other wired speakers; they can cover large areas, have 150 Watts power output, and come in two color options. But they’re only around $150 per pair, or $125 each.

When searching for the best outdoor sound systems, there are two types to buy; wired and wireless. Wireless systems are best for those who have small to mid-size spaces and favor convenience. Speakers like the Sonos Move, JBL Partybox 310, and the Pyle produce great sound quality for the average listener. But if you’re particular about the fine details, you’d probably be more satisfied with a wired system. Polk, Bose, Kicker, and Definitive Technology are all great options.
